Questions to ask before hiring a floor coating contractor

The most useful contractor questions turn a sales description into a written scope. Ask what will be removed, how the slab is profiled, how defects are handled, which exact products form each layer, how conditions are measured, and what must happen before the floor returns to service.

Ask for evidence about preparation, repair, products, coverage, moisture, cure, texture, exclusions, and warranty terms. Clear answers should appear in the proposal, not remain verbal.

Questions about the slab

What existing paint or coating will be removed? How will oil and unknown sealers be addressed? Which cracks and joints are filled, honored, or excluded? What happens if weak concrete appears during grinding? Is moisture testing recommended or required?

Request photos or a sketch showing repair locations and coated boundaries.

Questions about the system

What is the manufacturer and exact product in each layer? What coverage and broadcast rate are specified? Which coat supplies UV stability, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and texture? Are the products approved together as one system?

Avoid accepting “industrial grade” or a coat count as a complete specification.

Questions about installation control

How are slab temperature, air temperature, humidity, and dew point checked? How are batches mixed and timed? What dust collection and edge-prep methods are used? How are wet edges managed on a large floor?

Ask who will be on site and who has authority to stop work if conditions are wrong.

Questions about handoff and warranty

When may people walk, return storage, roll equipment, park, wash, and expose the floor to chemicals? Which cleaners and mats are approved? What is covered, excluded, and required to make a claim? Who provides product and color records?

Pair this list with the cost comparison guide.

Common questions

Should I ask for product data sheets?

Yes. They help confirm application limits, cure, coverage, and intended use for the exact products in the proposal.

Is a lifetime warranty enough to choose a contractor?

No. Read coverage, exclusions, transfer terms, maintenance requirements, remedy, and who stands behind it. A long label can still have narrow coverage.

How many quotes should I compare?

Enough to understand the market and scope, but quality matters more than count. Give each bidder the same project facts so differences are meaningful.
